Understanding Task 1

You have 20 minutes to write at least 150 words describing visual data. You must:

• Identify main trends and patterns
• Compare and contrast data
• Report information objectively (no opinions)
• Use appropriate vocabulary and grammar

Upward Trends (Increase)

Verbs: rise, increase, grow, climb, go up, jump, surge, soar, rocket

Nouns: rise, increase, growth, climb, jump, surge

Examples:

• "Sales rose steadily from 2010 to 2015."
• "There was a steady rise in sales between 2010 and 2015."

Downward Trends (Decrease)

Verbs: fall, decrease, decline, drop, go down, plunge, plummet, slump

Nouns: fall, decrease, decline, drop, slump

Examples:

• "Unemployment fell sharply in 2018."
• "There was a sharp fall in unemployment in 2018."

No Change (Stability)

Verbs: remain stable, stay constant, level off, plateau, stabilize

Nouns: stability, plateau

Examples:

• "Prices remained stable throughout the period."
• "There was a period of stability in prices."

Fluctuation

Verbs: fluctuate, vary, oscillate

Nouns: fluctuation, variation

Examples:

• "The exchange rate fluctuated between 2015 and 2020."
• "There were fluctuations in the exchange rate."

Slow Change

"The population increased gradually over the decade."

Fast Change

"Profits rose dramatically in the final quarter."

Very Fast Change

"Costs plummeted drastically after the policy change."

Introduction (1 sentence)

Paraphrase the question.

Question: "The graph shows the number of tourists visiting Egypt from 2010 to 2020." Introduction: "The line graph illustrates tourist arrivals in Egypt over an eleven-year period beginning in 2010."

Overview (2-3 sentences)

Summarize the main trends. Don't include specific data.

Example: "Overall, tourist numbers increased significantly during the period, despite a notable decline between 2015 and 2017. By 2020, visitor figures had reached their highest point."

Body Paragraph 1 (3-4 sentences)

Describe the first main trend with specific data.

Example: "In 2010, approximately 14 million tourists visited Egypt. This figure rose steadily to 15 million in 2012, before climbing more sharply to reach a peak of 19 million in 2015."

Body Paragraph 2 (3-4 sentences)

Describe the second main trend or contrasting information.

Example: "However, tourist arrivals fell dramatically between 2015 and 2017, dropping to just 8 million. From 2017 onwards, there was a strong recovery, with numbers increasing rapidly to 13 million in 2019 and reaching 20 million by 2020."

Making Comparisons

Higher/More:

"Sales in 2020 exceeded those in 2019."

Lower/Less:

"Profits were lower in Q1 than in Q4."

Similar:

"Revenue in 2018 was similar to that in 2019."

Mistake 1: Including Opinions

❌ "The increase in sales was good for the company." ✅ "Sales increased by 20% during the period."

Mistake 2: Copying the Question

❌ "The graph shows the number of tourists visiting Egypt from 2010 to 2020." ✅ "The line graph illustrates tourist arrivals in Egypt over an eleven-year period."

Mistake 3: Missing the Overview

Always include an overview paragraph summarizing main trends.

Mistake 4: Describing Every Detail

Focus on main trends and significant changes, not every data point.

Mistake 5: Poor Time Management

Spend exactly 20 minutes on Task 1. Don't exceed this, as Task 2 is worth more marks.

Stay Objective: Task 1 is descriptive, not analytical. Report what you see, don't explain why.
