IELTS Reading: Skimming and Scanning Techniques
Time management is crucial in IELTS Reading. You have 60 minutes to read three passages and answer 40 questions. Skimming and scanning are essential skills that help you find information quickly without reading every word.
Understanding the Difference
Skimming: Reading quickly to get the general idea or main points Scanning: Looking for specific information (names, dates, numbers, keywords)
Use Skimming For:
- Getting an overview of the passage before answering questions
- Understanding the main topic and structure
- Matching headings to paragraphs
- Identifying the writer's opinion or purpose
Use Scanning For:
- Finding specific details (names, dates, places, numbers)
- Locating keywords from questions
- True/False/Not Given questions
- Sentence completion tasks
Step 1: Read the Title and Subheadings
These give you the main topic and structure.
Step 2: Read the First and Last Paragraphs
The introduction presents the topic; the conclusion summarizes key points.
Step 3: Read the First Sentence of Each Paragraph
Topic sentences usually contain the main idea of each paragraph.
Step 4: Notice Keywords and Repeated Words
These indicate important concepts.
Example: If you see "climate change," "global warming," and "carbon emissions" repeated, you know the passage is about environmental issues.
Step 1: Identify What You're Looking For
Before scanning, know exactly what information you need (a name, date, place, etc.).
Step 2: Use Visual Clues
- Capital letters (names, places)
- Numbers (dates, statistics)
- Italics or bold text
- Quotation marks
Step 3: Move Your Eyes Quickly
Don't read every word. Let your eyes jump across the text looking for your target.
Step 4: Slow Down When You Find It
Once you locate the keyword, read that sentence carefully for context.
Skimming Practice
Read this paragraph in 10 seconds and identify the main idea:
"The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 18th century, transformed society from an agricultural economy to an industrial one. Factories replaced home-based production, cities grew rapidly, and new social classes emerged. While industrialization brought economic growth and technological innovation, it also created poor working conditions, child labor, and environmental pollution."
Main idea: The Industrial Revolution transformed society but had both positive and negative effects.
Scanning Practice
Find the answer to this question in 15 seconds:
"When did the Industrial Revolution begin?"
Answer: Late 18th century
Mistake 1: Reading Every Word
This wastes time. Practice moving your eyes faster.
Mistake 2: Not Knowing What to Look For
Always read the question first so you know what to scan for.
Mistake 3: Stopping at the First Keyword
The answer might not be at the first mention. Keep scanning.
Mistake 4: Ignoring Context
After finding a keyword, read the surrounding sentences to understand the full meaning.

Practice Daily: Spend 15 minutes daily skimming and scanning English texts (news articles, academic passages).
